PROJECTS: SUMMER STORIES
Exhibition at Ford Park, Chagford, September 2019
This is a collection of photographs taken of summer moments that have a big story behind them. Each image stands alone - they seem quiet, still, random in themselves as images but they all belie a convoluted or bizarre story surrounding them. “Most of these images were shot this year and have come about during a time of my life when I have begun writing again but find it difficult to make time for writing in my usual routine as a mother, photographer, home-maker and house-keeper! I write short stories and poetry and these photographs - slivers of bigger stories that were going on at the time became almost a ‘shorthand’, a way I was able to capture a whole story I wanted to later write about. This is a new process for me and enables me to reproduce the scenario - as well as the atmosphere - in one image that I later expand on in words. I strive to photograph what something feels like more than what it looks like. The last image in the series, for example, ‘Barbeque at Diane’s’ gave rise to a short story with the same name. The smoke from the pile of logs that was the makeshift barbecue, the silhouette of my main character and the Percheron stallion that had just appeared on the scene were all I needed to write my entire story back at home.”
The image ‘A Pause In Our Walk With Krystyne’ first on display here just won an Honorary Mention in the prestigious International Photography Awards/Lucie Awards, 2019.
